From Latin tractatus, a treaty is
he closing wave ending of a negotiation or dispute, after having discussed and reached an agreement. The notion of treaty is used to name the documentation that records that conclusion and, in a broader sense, to text or manual on a certain subject .
The notion of international treaty It is used to name those who subscribe actors of international law and who can be formed by one or more related legal tools. This tool is usually used to set territorial limits or end a warlike confrontation.
One of the most famous treaties is the Treaty of Versailles , which was signed in 1919 at the end of World War I . Among its most relevant consequences was the imposition of Germany and to the nations that supported her to accept the material and symbolic responsibility of war.
Treated as a literary genre
As literary genre, the treaty is part of the orbit of the didactic and consists of the objective and integral declaration of a specific matter. Through different sections, the treaty uses the expository text to address a specialized audience that intends to increase its knowledge in the subject matter.
The treaty must include a large amount of precise data, such as definitions, dates or magnitudes, often included at the bottom of the page so as not to obstruct the reading and understanding of the text.
It is divided into numerous sections that help to organize it in a correlative and logical way, as well as in the case of the novel the different events are grouped into chapters. In addition, the author writes in the third person and always refers to the same audience, which has a certain notion of the subject or is familiar with some concepts explained in this text.
In turn within this literary genre there are some subgenres which have to do with the type of information that is disseminated, the audience to which they are addressed, the type of language used or the way in which it is structured. Some of these subgenres are monographopuscule dictionary, encyclopedia, summary and manual.
Experts argue that the dictionary , the encyclopedia , he manual and the monograph , among others, are subgenres of the treaty. Aristotle (384 B.C. -322 B.C. ), Saint Thomas of Aquino (1225 -1274 ) and Denis Diderot (1713 -1784 ) were some of the treaty's cultivators as a literary genre.
Of all of them, Aristotle should be mentioned as one of those who stood out. He made treaties on different areas, such as natural sciences, philosophy, zoology and logic. In doing so he consulted various sources and critically discerned what could be relevant to the investigation. It was, it should be mentioned, the first that proposed a systematic structure for this type of texts that would allow a simpler and more orderly reading.
Tomás de Aquino, based on this structure imposed by Aristotle, continued to develop techniques to improve gender. His Theological Summa, brings together a treatise on theology where he expresses his research and arguments about human nature and the existence of God. Although it is a book with absolutely dogmatic exhibitions that leaves no room for contradictions and was essential to disseminate Scholastic pedagogy, not all treaties are of such nature. In fact, in a treaty the space for doubt may arise and the counter argument, because the objective is to take the reader towards the knowledge of the truth and this in many cases is relative.
As a complementary fact and to finish with this exhibition, it is worth mentioning that in the origins the genre served to capture the codes and rules of coexistence which were established in the various villages, also recording the historical events and the different pacts that were made. Because of this, even today the conventions that are signed between different nations on a given issue are called this way.
